Jared Taylor is encouraging Microbiology 418 students to reflect, and take responsibility when using AI tools

This website features stories and content submitted by individuals within the UBC community. We value the diversity of perspectives and experiences that these stories bring to our platform. In MICB 418: Industrial Microbiology, Jared Taylor allows students to use any available generative AI tools to research and develop their final group presentation about ethical and legal issues within the field of industrial microbiology. The caveat is that each group must take responsibility for any false information provided by these AI tools. They must also track and report on when and how they used these tools to develop their presentation materials.

To help with this, Dr. Taylor provides an academic integrity checklist and survey (developed in collaboration with Dr. Simon Bates) that each group must complete and submit before giving their presentation to the class. The survey, administered via Qualtrics, asks each group to reflect on the process they used to research and develop their presentation topic.

The groups must also reflect on the use of any Generative AI tools, and how they feel these tools did or did not benefit their learning. They are provided with these reflective exercises:

Reflection – Usefulness of the tools
If you used any generative AI tools, do you feel they enhanced your learning? Did they enhance the quality of your final product? Briefly explain. Alternatively, if you considered using the tools but then decided not to, briefly explain this decision.

Reflection – Accuracy of the material
If you used any generative AI tools, how did you ensure that all materials and content generated by the tools are factual and accurate? Briefly explain. If you decided not to use any AI tools, briefly explain why you have confidence in the sources you used for your learning and presentation content.
