Can you require ChatGPT 5 With an Account by OpenAI for use in your class?
No. Students must not be required to sign up for or use ChatGPT With an Account. This advice also applies to all other models provided by ChatGPT other than without an account. There is a separate advisory about ChatGPT without an account.
PIA Guidance Reasoning
- Users must create accounts to use ChatGPT 5 with an account, requiring a valid email address and phone number.
- User information is stored, used, and copied outside of Canada. Because UBC does not hold an agreement with ChatGPT, we have no assurances as to the data’s uses or storage safety.
- Besides ChatGPT 5 without an account, all other models provided by OpenAI require an account and therefore must not be required for use within your course. This includes ChatGPT o3, ChatGPT 5 Pro, SORA, and others.
