Replay: Developing Critical Generative AI Literacy Through Challenge-Based Activities

In this session, we explored how challenge-based learning can help faculty, staff, and students develop critical awareness and fluency with generative AI. We examined why AI literacy matters in higher education, and how it intersects with essential skills such as digital fluency, critical thinking, and academic integrity.

Participants tried out hands-on challenges that demonstrated different ways AI can be integrated into teaching materials, learning activities, and discussions of critical issues. We also discussed institutional competency frameworks and practical strategies for incorporating AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot into educational settings.

This workshop emphasized both the creative potential and the ethical complexities of using generative AI, encouraging experimentation while foregrounding the importance of responsible and reflective use.
